Restaurant Description

Schneider's is known for our traditional Home Cooking: Sauerbraten, Wienerschnitzel, Chicken Paprikash, Hungarian Beef Goulash, Roast Pork, Bratwurst, Knockwurst, Parmiagiana, - Veal, Chicken, Egg Plant; N.Y. & Rib Steaks, Prime Rib, Roast Beef, Roast Turkey, Meat Loaf, Corned Beef, broiled & fried Seafood, real Hamburgers, Beef Liver, Soups, homemade Red Cabbage, Potato Salads, Beer Kraut, Spätzle, Potato Dumplings, Pies, Cakes, Apple & Cherry Strudel, Mom’s own Rice Pudding, homemade Ice Cream & old fashioned Ice Cream Parlor Fountain Treats, friendly waitress service and more. We may be known for our hearty German-Austrian-Hungarian dishes, but we’re not too bad with the steaks, Italian, American and deli meals, either. We broil, we fry, we grill, we slice, we dice and we saute. Mrs. Schneider’s been dishing ‘em out for over 45 years (with help from family and friends). We may not be fancy, we are just GOOD!

Schneider’s is a family tradition started in January 1960 in a “turn of the Century” Ice Cream Parlor on Clinton Avenue in Newark, NJ. Dad bought a Chocolate Candy Store/Ice Cream Parlor typical in any major New Jersey city. Originally opened as “Strubbe’s” and later known as “Brinkmann’s”. Dad was the one that learned the making of Chocolates, Candies and Ice Creams from Mr. Brinkmann. On Holidays, especially Valentines and Easter, there were lines out the door for his Chocolate Hearts and Rabbits.
Mom was encouraged to do the cooking and baking of lunch and dinner items at the request of other “Avenue” merchants.

When the family relocated the business to Avon-by-the-Sea in 1970, a new chapter opened. As the Chocolates were ‘retired’, Mom added more and more of her ‘Old World’ dishes that she and “Oma” used to cook. Mom still cooks every day and hasn’t looked back nor slowed down. She enjoys talking to her many customers, sometimes three or four generations of loyal customers visit with her.

COME FOR THE MEAL, STAY FOR DESSERT

Check out our 100 year tradition of fountain treats made with homemade ice cream. Whether for nostalgia, or for the first time, go back to that time when sundaes, sodas, shakes, malts and banana splits were real. And were served in ice cream parlors by waitresses. And were brought to you at your table. No kidding! And the ice cream was homemade on the premises by the owner. TRUE! Well, you’ve found that place again, at SCHNEIDER’S (we just never stopped the old tradition - Mom wouldn’t let us!)
