Restaurant Description
It’s hard not to smile when you walk through the door into George’s and see owner John Karapanagiotis’ smiling face greet you with a friendly hello. When you come for breakfast, order the chipped beef. George still oversees its daily production (he made it himself for the past 37 years and only recently passed the torch). It’s so good that a perfect world would consist of eating chipped beef every morning without gaining a pound.
We suggest you get up early one morning, skip breakfast at your hotel or B&B and take a long stroll along the promenade in front of the Cape May beaches. You can head all the way down to the cove, see the early morning surfers catching waves, then turn back around and make your way to George’s. Grab a booth and be prepared to feast on fabulous food – but bring cash, they don’t take anything else here. It’s well worth the ATM visit because before you know it, you’ll be feasting on, for instance, the banana French toast. John sautés the bananas in brown sugar and butter and layers and stacks them on the French toast slices with some hot syrup dripping down the stacks and onto the plate.
If you’re more of a late riser, George’s has you covered with an awesome lunch and Mediterranean dinner menu. The Greek lemon chicken salad is a favorite and the chicken quesadilla is irresistible, with ooey-gooey cheeses and lightly-browned top.
John’s kicked up the dinner menu this year, adding more mezes (appetizers), including Sagknaki, Kefalograviera Greek cheese grilled in a cast-iron skillet then flambéed with ouzo out front, calamari, and Spanakopita. If you come with friends, order five or six mezes for your Greek feast. The prices are reasonable so this feast won’t set your wallet back. George’s also has traditional entrees like Greco Chicken, two grilled chicken breasts with roasted red peppers and melted feta cheese on top.
Enjoy!
