History
The grassy knoll, located along the northeastern banks of the Great Egg Harbor River in Mays Landing, acquired the name the name “Sugar Hill” during the late 1700’s. During these years the sugar, molasses and rum that came by tall ships from the far east were stored on the site awaiting shipments by horse and carriage to the Philadelphia markets.
During the Revolutionary War, many privateers seeking shelter from the British, fled up the river to Mays Landing selling their pirated cargo on the docks at Wheaton’s Shipyard. Early history books tell the story of one such privateer, Captain Snell, nicknamed “The Hero of Sugar Hill”, who brought havoc to 29 British ships as they tried to capture Mays Landing.
On this grassy knoll, the private mansion of William Moore was built, circa 1846. One of Mays Landing most prominent residents, Mr. Moore was not only a State Senator, but also a prosperous entrepreneur. He built and managed a fleet of sailing vessels which were engaged in commerce along the entire Eastern seaboard.
In 1986 the mansion was restored by the Boylan family and opened to the public in 1987 as “The Inn at Sugar Hill” a restaurant and Bed & Breakfast.

Spend a restful night in one of our antique filled, air-conditioned guest rooms, all with private baths, many with working fireplaces and river views. In the morning enjoy a creative continental breakfast served on one of the Inn’s two riverside verandas or garden café. During the day enjoy a quiet walk along the waterfront and adjoining brick walkways of Gaskills Park. The quaint Main St. Shops are within sight of the Inn and Gravelly Run General Store and Antique Center is two miles down the road. Ocean City beaches, Atlantic City shows, wineries and a regional shopping mall are all within a 15-miute drive. Be sure to visit our gift shop, “Cottage Gifts at Sugar Hill” offering local artisans works along with Sugar Hill memorabilia.
The Innkeeper’s Rendezvous, which includes a full-course candlelight dinner for two on the night of arrival plus one of our rooms for the night makes a great getaway or gift idea.
Before retiring to your room for the evening enjoy a visit to our authentic Victorian Bar that once stood in a turn of the century Philadelphia Tavern. Now, restored to its original grandeur, it has become the focal point of our waterside bar.
